Mike the headless chicken, also known as Miracle Mike, was hatched on April 20th, 1945. He was a male Wyandotte breed. The accounts of how Mike became the miraculous headless chicken vary slightly.

One is that farmer Lloyd Olsen decided to behead fifty of his chickens one day, but one refused to die. Another is that the farmer’s wife asked him to kill a chicken for supper on September 10, 1945. Lloyd chose a five-plus months old Wyandotte. He beheaded it, but the chicken refused to die.

The bottom line is that around six months after the chicken hatched, it survived death.

The bird ran around for a while in panic before it settled down. Then he went on to try to peck for food as if nothing had happened.

Lloyd was shaken, and so was his wife. And so were the Wyandotte’s fellow brothers and sisters who looked at him with…
