TThe incredible human imagination created a lot of unbelievable fictional characters. However, you will be surprised to know that there is a history behind the four-legged characters in books, movies, and cartoons.

This is the story of Josephine Myrtle Corbin, an American girl who was born on May 12th, 1868, in Tennessee. Corbin, unlike other children, was born with an extraordinary condition. She owned an extra set of legs and an extra pelvis.

Early life

Corbin was the daughter of William H. Corbin and Nancy Corbin. Her parents carried stunning similarities to the point that doctors had to clarify whether they were related. Nevertheless, results showed that Corbin’s parents were not. In addition to Corbin, William and Nancy had three other children.

According to doctors’ reports, Corbin’s delivery had no complications. The only extraordinary condition about her birth was her unique features. She was born with a dipygus twin. Dipygus is the growth of two or more arms or legs in between the normal ones. Only fourteen cases of dipygus have been recorded in the medical literature. Thus, dipygus is a very rare condition.
