TThe Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Harry and Meghan, decided to renounce their royal income. But as the public, the question is what exactly did they leave behind? To answer your question, we need to take a glimpse at how the royals make money.

The truth is the British royals are not allowed to work to earn money. But then how do they make that money if they are not allowed to work?

According to the author David Mcclure, it all boils down to real estate. The British Crown owns estates all over the U.K. that are passed down throughout their lineage. This real estate portfolio is what makes their primary source of income. So, it is inherited passive income.

A good example is the Balmoral Castle that Queen Elisabeth II owns as her inheritance. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert first bought the property in February 1848. The income from inherited private estates does not go into the Royal Treasury but rather into the inherited owner's account.
